Council leader recommends civil disobedience

The Conservative party in Hastings received some flak for not attending the anti-British National Party in the town before the local elections this month.

All councillors were invited to the town centre rally, but not one conservative councillor showed up, labour group leader Jeremy Birch told the first meeting of Hastings Borough Council of the 2008-9 administration this week.

To much laughter, council leader Peter Pragnell said: "I've never known a rally or a march achieve anything, except if they start breaking windows."

Many of the councillors jokingly asked if Cllr Pragnell was giving them the go-ahead to break windows.
