Life has become easier for nurses and patients at West Meads Surgery.
A new electrically-operated examination couch has been installed there thanks to an anonymous donor.

The generous gesture saw the individual pay more than £1,000 for the adjustable piece of furniture.

Delighted Dr Nick Rowse, the practice's senior partner, said: "We are so grateful to receive such a useful addition to the surgery.

"It will make examinations so much easier for our nurses and help our less-mobile patients generally."

The couch could soon be joined by another which the surgery's recently-formed Friends group hopes to buy.

The members have raised more than £550 since the Friends was formed in May to pay for equipment for patients not usually funded by the NHS.

A recent coffee morning in West Meads Hall raised £240 to help to swell the funds.

Committee members and volunteers set up stalls – including bric-a-brac, nearly-new items, books and crafts – as well as holding a raffle for the worthy cause.

The next event planned is a quiz night at the hall at 7.30pm on October 11.

Teams of up to six people are invited to test their knowledge for the £60 cash prize.

Tickets, priced £8 each including a glass of wine and a ploughman's supper, from Jane Castleton on 01243 827997.
