Youth group rallies for cancer charity

A GORING youth group which includes members who have been directly affected by cancer raised more than £1,000 for charity in one morning.

ZAPS youth group from St Mary’s Church in Ilex Way, held a coffee morning in the front room of the group leader’s home in Denton Close, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

“We were rushed off our feet,” said group leader Zena Matthews, 53. “We were only going for an hour and a half, but in that time we had more than 50 people in our front room! You couldn’t see the carpet, it was so busy.”

The coffee morning was organised by members of the youth group, who managed to gain support from the local community and received donations from Tesco and Ian Hart Funeral Services.

The initial target for the morning was to raise £150, but the group raised more than £1,000.

Supporting Macmillan Cancer Support was particularly important to the group after family members of two of the boys in the group were diagnosed with cancer within six weeks of each other.

Ollie Henwood, nine, of Palatine Road, said he has found his dad Bruce’s cancer quite difficult to come to terms with.

“I find it hard to see my dad poorly,” he said. “But I was glad I could do this coffee morning to help Macmillan. I helped in the kitchen most, I had fun.”

Ollie Walker, 15, of Ryecroft Close, said he was “in complete shock” when he heard his brother Jack, 19, had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma last year.

“It was really difficult to take in,” he said.

“But I think it’s really good how much money we have raised, no-one ever expected to get that much, and Macmillan have been great for our family.”
