Destiny calling . . .

IT HAS been described as a cross between "The Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter, transplanted to America", but Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief does have a tantalising premise.

Based on the best-selling teen fiction series by Rick Riordan, it tells the story of a troubled New York teenager battling Dyslexia and ADHD who discovers he is, in fact, the son of the Greek god Poseidon.

It led one reviewer to comment rather archly: "Aspirational, middle-class parents everywhere will be saying,' Yes, yes, we knew it, our child is not a lairy teenager, but actually a Greek demi-god'".

But is it just pushy parents, dreaming big dreams for their children who succumb to a story like this?

Isn't there something in all of us which longs to discover that we are special, that we have a destiny and that we are more than we might seem?

Imagine for a moment . . . What if someone told you that you were destined for another world?

Somewhere beautiful beyond your imagining, where every purpose is realised and every promise fulfilled.

Imagine you learn that you are, in fact, the son or daughter of a great king, one who is immortal and all powerful, who loves you and is seeking you. But the way to him has been blocked.

You have an enemy and this enemy is out to ensure that you never make it home. He is intent on keeping you in the dark about your true worth and inheritance.

Then, what if that someone told you that he could lead you back to your father?

You will have to put your trust in him and learn discipline.

There maybe many obstacles and your enemy will never be too far away, but he promises to be with you.

He offers you his life. "The time has come," he says, "Come, follow me . . ."

The truth is, this is no mere fantasy, this is what Christians believe.

In the Bible, we learn how we became separated from God "The King of kings and Lord of Lords", and how God worked to redeem a wrecked and ruined world.

It tells us why we are here, what we are supposed to do on earth and where we will go in the future.

It could change your life . . .
