Pounds, tucks and types
PICK up any magazine on the newsagent's shelves at this time of year and it's a safe bet that the pages are filled with weight loss plans.
TV advertisements, poster campaigns, friends and colleagues are either dieting themselves or encouraging you to do it… you can't get away from it!
Of course everyone agrees that excessive weight is bad for your health and it goes without saying that if we want a long and healthy life, we should all try to exercise and eat a well balanced diet.
For some people, the shedding of extra pounds has gone a step too far. Too much weight loss can be equally as bad for you.
Thankfully, even the fashion industry has done a lot of soul searching and is moving away from stick-sized models.
Ok, so you're the right size and you eat well but what about your body shape?
Your nose is too large, your ears too small, you need a tummy tuck or a face lift… It seems to me that whatever we look like, we're never satisfied!
I can't help wondering if this really is the message we want our kids to aspire to.
You can have a beautiful body and be a pretty awful person.
Fantastic looks aren't everything and speaking on a personal level, I'm glad about that!
There was a time in the Bible when the nation of Israel was looking for a king.
They chose a pretty impressive figure, a man who stood head and shoulders above the rest.
They got what they wanted, but by picking Saul they landed themselves with an unstable and unpredictable leader and regretted their choice.
The Bible tells us that God isn't so much concerned with what's on the outside.
He is more interested in what's on the inside.
As with the dieting, we're prone to make New Years resolutions to change our ways but give it a few weeks, nay days, and we've reverted back to type. We need help.
Despite the weather, about now, a lot of churches in Worthing are starting a new Alpha Course, which is an opportunity to explore the real meaning of life in an informal, fun and friendly way.
