Could you be the one to name Worthing’s new pool?

WITH Worthing’s new pool a little over a year away from opening, it is still yet to be named.

But that is about to change as Worthing Borough Council has this week launched a name-the-new-pool competition, the winner of which will receive a one-year free swimming pass and an invite to the opening ceremony.

Duncan Anderson, general manager of Worthing Leisure Centre, said: “We are encouraging the local community, particularly its younger members, to come up with some ideas. It’s a great opportunity for youngsters to get involved in this fantastic facility. Worthing Borough Council is looking for imaginative, creative ideas that would capture what the pool is all about. The pool belongs to our community so we want the community to name the pool.” The six-lane, 25-metre competition pool with moveable floor, is due to open in spring, 2013. To enter the competition, visit www.worthingleisure.co.uk and complete an entry form. Entries must be received by March 30.

After the closing date, the judges will shortlist the best three names, and the public can vote for them online.

n MORE than an acre of Beach House Grounds greensward will be closed for several months while the new pool gets its cash-saving heating/cooling system installed.

Worthing Borough Council’s planning committee is being asked to approve the sinking of 32 deep boreholes just south of Beach House, each containing a pile to access ground-source heat for the adjacent pool’s cooling and heating demands.

The depth of each 8in-diameter pile will vary between 330ft and 500ft, After work on the ground source heat pump field is completed, the area will be restored to its former state, with the top of each pile 5ft below the surface.

It is planned for the area to be reopened to the public at the time of the new pool’s completion. Jeffrey Lee, senior designer for pool architects Wilkinson Eyre, said the new system will provide 100 per cent of the new pool’s cooling demand, and 41.7 per cent of the heating demand.

The annual cost savings would be £70,446 a year, with an installation payback period of 5.1 years.

@8@8 GJW It's good to know that with your wealth of knowledge on the pools, and your clear promotion for the fact that it's a 25m and not a 50m, you elected not to provide what exactly has made you so experienced in the field of pool sizes…..perhaps you were on the project team for the Worthing pool maybe?? Either way, as a user of the K2 Pool at Crawley, which does break even, I can say without reservation that there are more than enough candidates willing to use a 50m at Worthing, if for nothing else than just because it's closer than Crawley. You have also missed that the pool would serve as a focal point along the south coast, and especially attract the wider swimming and triathlon community to both train in the pool and host competitions there……ergo, more visitors to Worthing, you see where I'm going with this. Anyway, I just felt that I should second the views of @frankly who got shot down a bit, and yes, the decision has been made, but it's just another reference for those in the future who want to know why Worthing got forgotten about to discover.

@7-Trust me Frankly, I have been to so many pools overs the years and like to think that maybe on this one I have a bit more 1st hand knowledge than you. For a start, you would go completely ballisitc if a 50m pool was built in Worthing, since the running costs alone would drain away any chance of our new pool running at break even. Secondly, whilst it is great to see so much more excersise classes and training lanes in pools, kids have so much more fun on slides and rapids, so it is essential that you get a good mix of pools, which is exactly what this new pool will provide. I respect your views on lack of consultation, location of the new pool and timingcost to the town, things that can be argued either way, but please, leave it there since on the subject of pool size, you are now out your depth....(nice little pun at the end there) lol.

@5 Quite thats why a 50 metre 8 lane competition pool would have been so much better. When not needed for competitions it could be used for larger "fun" area for the hordes attracted to Worthing on the promise of all this affordable housing. It`s NOT rocket science GJW

I would like the pool to keep the Aquarena name, as that was where my husband and I met in that pool in 1972 and we've been together ever since.

@4 Why would 50m pool make the difference, most people would want a larger 'fun' area! Name- 'Streams'

"six lane competitive pool"??? Well I never! I would happily name it .............. "INADEQUATE" - This is yet another blooper from the local council! - a 50 metre pool would have given a small somehing to come to Worthing for!
