MORE than £1million is to be spent enlarging Heene CE First School to help it cope with increased pressure on pupil space in central Worthing.
West Sussex County Council’s planning committee will tomorrow (Wednesday, November 16) be asked to approve the building of three extra classrooms, toilet and changing facilities at the Norfolk Street premises.
The 2.5-form entry school is at present full, with more than 309 pupils on the roll.
The additional accommodation, costing an estimated £1.1million, will make Heene a three-form entry school in the future, boosting numbers to a maximum of 360 pupils.
There will be a phased completion programme, with the first phase completing in September, 2012, to allow extra pupils to be admitted, and the second phase completing in December, 2012.
The estimated cost is £1.1m and additional staff will be required as numbers grow.
Worthing county and borough councillor James Doyle told the Herald: “There is increasing pressure on school places in the town centre, due to many more young families in the area, reflecting the changing population of Worthing.
“I have been in contact with many parents and they have told me that their children have to go out to schools in places like Lyndhurst Road and Durrington.
“It is too far a journey to take a five-year-old child, especially when we want to encourage people to walk to school.”
The original Heene CE “national” school opened in Heene Road in 1886. First-school pupils moved to the then-new Norfolk Street buildings in 1973, while the middle school remained at Heene Road.
Delays in relocating the middle school to Norfolk Street led to those pupils and staff being relocated to the Thomas A’Becket Middle School, in Glebeside Avenue.
