A FAMILY has had extra reason to celebrate after the new arrival of a baby girl meant five generations of females are now alive at the same time.

Sophie Grace Brewer was born in December, 2011, to new mum Sarah Brewer, and has three grandmothers – grandmother Ruth Newman, of Tunbridge Wells, great-grandmother Kathleen Tammadge and great-great-grandmother Dorothy Jones, both of whom live in Worthing.

Sophie met her four other generations of family on January 7, coincidentally in the same month her great-great-grandmother Dorothy turns 104.

Sarah, 31, from Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, said: “We are quite a close family, even though we are spread all over the place.

“It was lovely for us to come to Worthing and all be together. My grandma and great-grandma were thrilled to meet Sophie.”

She added: “It’s lovely to have a big family – I joke with my husband Mike that by looking at my family he will know what I’ll look like when I grow old!”

Both Kathleen and Dorothy have lived around the Worthing and Littlehampton area for around 50 years. Kathleen, 81, of Lavington Road, said: “It was very exciting having all of us here. My mother, despite being 104, is still very with it and really enjoyed the get-together.”

Kathleen herself has had three daughters, the eldest of whom is Sarah’s mother Ruth.

“I guess you could say girls run in the family,” she said. “Thinking about it, there are a lot of us. I guess you could say we carry genes for longevity as well!”
