Ferring resident questions Asda plans for Country Fayre site

WHY didn’t the public know until the last moment that Asda had gained approval to open a supermarket in Ferring?

This question was asked by Ferring resident June Draper after reading last week’s Herald story revealing Asda‘s plans for the former Country Fayre site in Littlehampton Road.

“We had been assured all along that Asda was not moving there,” Mrs Draper, of Cissbury Road, Ferring, said this week.

“We already have enough big supermarkets in the area, and we don’t need another.”

Ricky Bower, Arun District Council’s cabinet member for planning, said the identity of the tenant of the new building was not a matter that the planning committee could control.

Permission had been granted to Country Fayre site owner Michael Wiggins to redevelop the site, continuing its A1 Retail designation.

An Asda supermarket complied with A1 Retail use.

“I believe members of the council assumed Mr Wiggins was intending to redevelop the site himself, but set further back from the road.

“There may have been speculation, but this did not form any part of planning matters,” said Mr Bower.

I wish to thank everyone involved in bringing another supermarket to this area. The new store will bring urgently needed jobs, some full time, and competition to other stores in the area.Surely this can not a bad thing. As for the remark " nobody wants another supermarket in the area" well, nobody asked me .

brudie - please do not assume that just because YOU dont want another supermarket that nobody else does!. It is time that Tesco's were given some competition, worthing has been flooded with Tesco's. The arrival of Asda will offer shoppers greater choice and people will shop there. What a ridiculous suggestion that people boycot the stores, whilst ferring is very quaint and rustington serves its purpose the vast majority of people could not afford to do all of their essential weekly shopping in the small stores. I am not particularly pro Asda but I am a supporter of anything that brings new jobs and will offer people greater choice. My one and only concern is the major impact this will have on traffic, it was bad enough with a flurry of a few people leaving country fayre when it was open so can only imagine significant flow from Asda will cause problems. Unless they follow the same option as Sainsburys rustington and install traffic lights?. Come on ferring, get a life and appreciate the extra jobs. what other choice was there?, ANOTHER garden centre!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHY didn’t the public know until the last moment that Asda had gained approval to open a supermarket in Ferring? Because you cannot tell people that something is before it is. You cannot say approval has been granted untill it is granted. Doh ! June Draper If you are trying to say you did not know it might be granted, it has been through the planing system like every thing else has to. If you wish to object thre is a correct time and place to do so. not moan about it after. Even the gossip put Asda in the runnig before Country Fayre closed down.

No one wants another supermarket in the area. I certainly don't. BUT, I bet that on the day it opens it will be packed by everyone, those who want it or not. If everyone Boycotts these mamoth markets they might not be so ready to disrupt our neighbourhoods.

Surely there was some sort of consultation with other councils such as Worthing Borough on this?. I am surprised if not,as Asda will upset WBC`s obvious favourite supermarket Tesco.at Durrington.. Not to mention the angry motorists using the A259 Littlehampton Rd,its bad enough now just you wait until Asda add to their woes.Do we really need yet another supermarket?.
