A FINDON grandmother, whose family has a history of heart defects, has raised more than £3,000 for the British Heart Foundation.

Jill Hilton, 64, of Beech Road, Findon, used her time as lady captain of Littlehampton golf club to raise £3,060 for the charity which has not only helped her, but also her grand-daughter.

Jill, who was born with a hole in her heart, had an operation in 1952 to resolve the problem. Coincidentally, her grand-daughter Maggi-Mae was also born with pulmonary vein stenosis – a narrowing of the vein that leads from the lungs to the heart.

Since her diagnosis, Maggi-Mae, four, has now had five operations, and is going from strength-to-strength.

Jill said: “I wanted to raise the money because, not only is it almost 60 years since my heart operation, but Maggi’s life has also been dramatically improved, thanks to the work the surgeons have done.

“You see her getting better every day, and hopefully, she will eventually lead a normal life like any other child.”

Over her year’s captaincy at Littlehampton golf club, Jill organised numerous fund-raising events, including a coffee morning, a quiz night and a “drive off” – a golfing competition to guess how far competitors could drive a ball down a golf course.

Jill also managed to raffle off a Mulberry handbag, raising £450 in one go.

The cheque was presented to the British Heart Foundation chairwoman for the area, Jane Ramage, at Littlehampton Golf Club in October.

Jill said: “It was a lot of fun raising all the money. The British Heart Foundation do so much to help research, that I wanted to give something back.”
