New West Sussex County Council chairman is “delighted”

THE new chairman of West Sussex County Council is “absolutely delighted” to take on the role.

Conservative coun-cillor Mike Coleman, pictured, on Friday succeeded Mark Dunn, who had held the post since 2008.

Mr Coleman has been a member of the council since 2001, representing the Nyetimber division.

His wife, Christina, is also a county councillor. “I am absolutely delighted,” said Mr Coleman. “I have lived in West Sussex for probably about 30 years now. I was actually born in Surrey, but Sussex is my home. I love what is best about Sussex – its heritage, the people, being near to the sea and the Downs – it is just a wonderful county to live in.”

A former deputy leader of the county council, Mr Coleman’s most recent appointment was as chairman of the corporate parenting panel. Mr Coleman is also a former member of Arun District Council and spent 27 years with IBM involving work in the UK, Europe and the USA.

In 1998, he set up his own communications consultancy business.

He is a trustee of the Chichester Harbour Trust and supporter of the West Sussex Army Benevolent Fund.

@ 12 frankly .....no chance pal. It's in the 2010 Conservative Manifesto so they will move heaven and earth to meet their commitments to the electors. That subject belongs to history.

Decline in coastline towns is evident throughout most of Britain with few exceptions. Worthing is not one of those exceptions. I believe our best hope for Worthing emerging at the other end of this recession with minimum damage is to reduce or abolish all non-essential expenditure. That starts at knowing what the true costs are of a products, services or staff really are. Then, and only then, can realistic judgement criteria be applied ie. "is it essential" ? If no, what are the negative implications of abolishment ? This may sound a little harsh but failure to adopt something similar to this approach for public expenditure will keep Worthing on a gentle but steady decline well into the future.

Correction Mr Coleman ............ it WAS a nice county to live in! Nice to see that this chap is up for a challenge but Joby is right in #7 post - the overheads to run his challenge will increase the overheads! I've lived here for 30 years and seen Worthing go unbelievably downhill - good luck!

why don't they call it a salary rather than an "allowance" or expenses

@ 3 talpa ......thanks for that info. Unfortunately a FOI request will be necessary as it does not tell us what the full costs of this position are. For example, office space, IT, junior staff support to his position, travel costs, employers NIC costs if applicable etc. His allowances are surprisingly low but the true costs of the position will be considerably higher.

@ 5 ....back up what you have inferred in your posting with hard evidence or example or, go to bed. Alternatively go down the pub. Dare I say it on this website, your comment qualifies for the reptile pits.

No need for an FOI. The answer is on the WSCC website. The Chairmen gets the basic allowance of £11,030 plus special responsibility allowance of £27,740. Members are entitled to renounce their allowance so it may be that less is paid. Allowances are published online in the summer.

@ 1 ......why not ask ? Just forward a Freedom of Information question to WSCC. Not sure anyone on this website can answer your assumption ?
