‘Awful sight’

DRIVING past what used to be the old Gio’s bar by the pier, I was shocked to see what the new management have done to the front of the bar/restaurant.

I have been assured by the leader of the council that businesses in Worthing are working hard to draw attention to our town as an up-and-coming place to live and work, so I was shocked to see this awful sight on our seafront which will surely draw quite the wrong sort of attention to our town.

Far from raising our profile, I think what’s been done makes our seafront look more like Margate/Southend. I am all for promoting our country and would love to see more English and Union Jack flags flying, but what they have created is cheap, tacky and tasteless.

Over recent months we’ve seen some sophisticated bars and restaurants open in town, Brio and Indigo for example, so I was excited to see that a new fish restaurant was arriving, but now I have seen the frontage I have great reservations about the quality of the establishment.

Would they have had to apply for some sort of planning permission to make these hideous changes I ask myself?

If so, I do hope the council will not permit future sights to adorn our historical seafront. If I wanted to turn the front of my house into a pirate ship, would I be allowed to? Whatever possessed them?

Please ask the residents of Worthing what they think of this awful sight on our seafront as I will now be so embarrassed to walk along the prom with any friends and family that come to visit.

Oh Anne your letter does appear to make you sound such a "SNOB" Worthing has lost almost all of it`s "historical seafront" there wasnt so much of it in the first place, the promenade being created to protect the town from flooding. The site of your rant was in my lifetime the site of the Pier Hotel,a rather grand title for a rather second rate booser, although they used to have a reasonable dart team. All this before demolition and the various ensuing businesses such as Steeres etc. I have said that I reserve judgement until I have had the chance to visit,I am intrigued to hear that they sell "Betty Stoggins" a wonderful Cornish ale this I will try then give my opinion. Perhaps you should do the same!

"Look to the mote in thine own eye, Madam.....,", he said pointing at the derelict, boarded-up ruins of The Clifton public house on the corner of Tarring Road.

Dear Anne. Have you any idea how ridiculous your letter has made you appear? At first I thought it may be some "Hyancinth Bucket" style joke but alas......... Sophisticated Bars & Restaurants? Are they anywhere near the Poundshop, Sports Directs, or the numerous charity shops? I visit Worthing VERY occasionally (would avoid the town centre if at all possible as it is an identitkit to any highstreet in the UK) and any new business venture should be welcomed and applauded. I would much rather visit Southend which has a wider variety of independent shops etc. than your beloved Worthing.

May i just say how short sighted is the lady who commented on the new pubrestaurant on the seafront. How much better does it look than a closed pub restaurant as so many public houses are closing here are people who have put money and time into a building to improve it. I personally think we should all be grateful that someone wants to spend time and money back into our community. Why are people so happy to knock someone who is only trying to establish a business and support their family. Having been in for a meal with my wife we had a great time what a breath of fresh air. Maybe you should try and go in before criticizing a place on its appearance. Well done to the new owners i wish you the best of luck from someone who is prepared to come in and judge you and not just look from the outside and decide they don't like it.
