Battle against polio continues

ON BEHALF of the Rotary clubs of Worthing, West Worthing and Worthing Steyne, I am writing to thank the local public for their generosity in the two-week campaign we ran in common with clubs all over the world to raise money for the eradication of polio.

The combined total from the proceeds of our temporary charity shop, the antiques valuation afternoon held at Broadwater Manor School and several public collections was 5,500, a magnificent amount.

This money will pay for 27,500 vaccinations of young children in third world countries and is a significant contribution to this vital work.

When Rotary started its campaign in 1985 to eliminate polio from the world, there were 350,000 new cases each year.

The total of people now infected is down to around 1,000 in only four countries.

However, the mass immunisations in the affected countries must continue to ensure that in the next few years, our goal is achieved and no more people will suffer from paralysis or death from this terrible scourge.

To date, Rotary and its partners have been responsible for the vaccination of over two billion children.
