Costly position

IN his weekly column (Herald, August 12), Ian Hart joined the growing number of people complaining that our local councillors do little for their money.

I expect in some cases he is right but some do seem to do more than others.

What I do, though, find more concerning is the enormous amount of money paid to Worthing and Adur's chief executive – around 115,000, which compares with 3,987 basic allowance for a Worthing councillor and 3,270 for an Adur councillor.

The chief executive is getting around 50 per cent of the total basic allowances of all 66 Adur and Worthing councillors.

After all, Worthing and Adur are only district-level councils and do not have the responsibilities of West Sussex County Council or a unitary authority with schools, social services, and highways.

On refuse, they only collect it – it is West Sussex that does the disposing.

Eric Pickles described recently the post of chief executive as a "non-job" and called for council leaders to take over – perhaps Worthing and Adur should consider the idea?.
