Experience I'd rather forget

In April, you highlighted a penalty charge notice issued on March 27 when my husband and I parked outside the McCarthy & Stone development in Union Place.

The sign, which had been in place informing motorists this bay was suspended, was missing, therefore, we had no idea we should not park there.

The parking officer was with my vehicle when I returned and confirmed someone had removed the sign.

He had kindly called his supervisor to ask for advice and was told to issue a ticket, anyway.

Since March 27, I have continued to plead my innocence that "the alleged contravention did not occur".

As part of the appeal process, I received photographic evidence from the parking enforcement team that I had parked my car in this bay.

This photo was vital evidence as it clearly showed no visible sign to indicate the suspension.

Thank you for that.

The signs have now been replaced.

I made sure I took a photo of the new sign – clearly visible – so I submitted this as part of my appeal, too.

Following a stage 1 and stage 2 appeal, the penalty charge notice has been cancelled.

Apparently, the council decided to show discretion, even though the notice was issued legally and correctly.

I am now going to try to forget what has been a very worrying and anxious experience and at the moment refuse to pay to park my car in Worthing.

I'll be very careful where I leave my bicycle!
