Lifting lid on the theatres
IT is reported that a large sum of money is required for refurbishment for the seats and carpets at the Connaught and repairs to the Pavilion roof.
In the present recession, some people may object to the cost of same, but to allow the theatres to fall into disrepair would be a tragedy for the town.
I visited Eastbourne to see a performance of Beauty and the Beast.
It was a wonderful show, and what a great theatre the Congress is.
It's a pity that we in Worthing do not have a similar venue.
We did some years ago when the Plaza cinema was used for a performance of My Fair Lady.
It was a large stage and theatre and the show was presented by Worthing Musical Comedy, who recently produced it again at the Connaught and again played to packed houses who were treated to a master class in acting, in particular, Andy Roberts as Higgins and Nikki Cicero as Eliza, aided by Ernie Blackman, Pickering, and Andy Taylor, Doolitle the dustman.
The spoon-playing by the chorus and dancers had me bouncing in my seat, so much so that that I did not notice seat springs protruding into my posterior.
In truth, there were not any, and my seat was very comfortable.
How I wish that all musical and dancing shows be produced at the Connaught, where you can see and hear every word.
The Pavilion Theatre is not really a suitable venue for them.
I have many fond memories of appearing at the Pavilion, but sitting in the audience, due to the seating arrangements, it's difficult to see the legs of the performers.
I am of average height and my wife objects to me sitting on her lap to be able to see.
I spent an arm and a leg to see Wayne Sleep – all I saw was his arms.
Even Littlehampton's Windmill Theatre and the Barn, Southwick, have raised seating.
I would suggest the Pavilion be used for stand-up comedians. etc., and reduced rates be offered to local amateur groups to present at the Connaught – they do perform to large audiences.
