READING Michael Davison's letter in the Herald lambasting the Royal Mail struck a chord with me.

Three years ago, when the ridiculous new system for measuring and pricing mail was introduced, I sent a letter to a very sick/elderly housebound friend and, because it was sent in an "old" recycled envelope, measuring 10in x 7in, and not 9in x 6in, her daughter had to collect it from the Post Office and pay a surcharge fee of 1.16.

I had no idea these envelopes had changed in size by an inch.

Although I paid my friend the money, our friendship never seemed the same again after that unfortunate incident.

And I thought I was doing the right thing by recycling an old envelope.

Who has the time and energy these days to stand in queues and measure sizes and thicknesses of envelopes?

I often receive letters myself that have been pre-opened.

Recently, a cheque book was delivered to a neighbour across the road I didn't know, who kindly called in person, to give me the correctly addressed item.

No wonder the Royal Mail loses so much money as the service it provides is so poor and unreliable.

I mainly use the internet now to communicate, but so many older people are disadvantaged/excluded because they can't use a computer.

I agree with Mr Davison – roll on privatisation.
