Proper network needed for bikes
THE "pedal politely" campaign mentioned in your report (Herald, February 25) is absolutely typical of the sort of half-baked, ineffectual, nanny-statist intervention that we are expected nowadays to tolerate in so many facets of our lives.
Local government departments, in the face of potentially swingeing cuts in expenditure budgets, are desperate to justify their existence, and inevitably try to do so by interfering increasingly with other people's freedoms.
It wouldn't be so bad if we weren't paying for it ourselves through council tax.
Personally, I have been cycling quite happily for more than 50 years.
I don't want to be stopped and lectured, and I don't need to be bribed with a new bell to replace the one that serves me perfectly well.
Most cyclists understand perfectly well the requirements of good manners and consideration, and the idiots that don't are not going to have their habits changed by being treated to statements of the blooming obvious.
Apropos discussion of cycling in your newspaper, it really is about time you stopped dredging up an accident on the promenade that happened 15 years ago.
Regrettable though it was, constant repetition has granted it an importance out of all proportion to its relevance.
It would be much more interesting to know how many cyclists have been killed or injured on local roads in the intervening period, while the local council has dismally failed to provide a decent cycle network around the town that might have kept them safe.
One must hope that a couple of minor accidents on the prom during the trial period are not used as an excuse to bury the whole initiative.
If they do actually continue with it, I have absolutely no doubt that some bright spark will have the entire route covered with CCTV cameras within a very short space of time.
