Residents near Tesco suffering

I HAVE a tremendous amount of sympathy for the residents living near the new Durrington Tesco store.

Common sense was forgotten when the planners granted permission for this.

This store is far too close to residents' property. For some, they will have a giant shadow in their gardens in the spring and autumn time, and to have a view of the store so close is unimaginable to most people.

The second mistake by the planners was to do nothing about the parking whilst this store was being built.

For almost three weeks, residents living close by have suffered inconsiderate but legal parking outside their homes.

On occasions, some have been unable to get out of their driveways.

Planners should have insisted on temporary parking restrictions to prevent contractors on the site clogging up the nearby roads in this very pleasant part of Worthing.

As the recently-elected county councillor for the area, I had no part in this decision making process. However, when the parking problems did start, I managed to get the police, fire brigade and highways to come along to see what they could do to relieve and monitor the situation.

The next hurdle for this immediate area is the proposed West Durrington development.

We all need to look at this to ensure similar mistakes are avoided.
