The wood was a lost opportunity
THE wood was a golden opportunity for a community project and guess what? The authorities blew it.
I read that there's no happy ending for any of the timber now. It's either burnt as it is or it's chipped and burnt.
Perfectly good timber gone to waste.
OK, so it was never going to be used in cabinet making before or after its sea voyage, but it could have been put to so much good use for the community.
What would it have taken to get the people of Worthing behind a community project where everyone would have benefited?
A quick advertising campaign using the local radio stations, newspapers and a few posters could have got hundreds of people, if not thousands, onto the beaches to help with the clear up.
I for one would have got the council to sell off the wood to raise money for local charities and community projects.
It could have been such a great thing to get families, friends, neighbourhood and the town together, doing something to clear the beach and do something good for others as well.
Surely a win-win situation.
Everyone I have spoken to would have joined in.
Local businesses could have donated lorries and vans to help with the transportation (I'm sure it would be worth it just for the publicity alone).
It wouldn't have taken much to have pulled a plan together.
And if it worked it would put Worthing in every paper in the country.
It would show how people could rally together to protect their beach and do something great by helping to raise money.
