Sharing the seatbelt safety message in Worthing

MOTORISTS were given a lesson in the importance of wearing a seatbelt.
As part of a week-long awareness campaign, police officers and firefighters held an event in Worthing to highlight the need to wear a seatbelt.
It was held at Halfords, at Lyons Farm, and was organised in conjunction with the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership.
Chief Inspector Di Roskilly of Sussex Police’s Roads Policing Unit said: “It has been law now since 1983 to wear a seatbelt in a car.
“A £500 fine can be issued to anyone who doesn’t wear their seatbelt without a valid excuse.
“The law was introduced to try to reduce the number of people being killed or seriously injured as they were thrown around or out of cars.
“Drivers and passengers involved in crashes who wear seatbelts are far less likely to sustain serious or fatal injuries, yet despite this, people still choose not to use them.
“Unfortunately, for some people, fear of a fine is the only thing that will make them wear seatbelts, but fundamentally our aim is to raise awareness and educate drivers and passengers about how seatbelts can save their lives.”
