VIDEO: Crowds flock to Durrington Festival

Waiting for Video...

ORGANISERS proclaimed this year’s Durrington Festival would be “the biggest and the best”, and from the number of people who turned out for it, they were not far wrong.

The week-long festival, which is in its 20th year, included a varied selection of events ranging from a charity quiz night, darts tournament, and a talk and exhibition of old pictures.

But, the highlight of the week was when thousands of people turned out for a jam-packed festival, carnival procession and 20-minute fireworks display on Saturday at Pond Lane recreation ground.

Festival committee member, Sharon Clements, said: “The fireworks were wonderful – really brilliant. It was the biggest display the festival has done by far and there was a full field of onlookers.”

There was a wide range of stalls and funfair rides as well as a popular wrestling ring.

*The festival’s chairman and treasurer, 50-year-old Peter Bloxham, died suddenly at home on Tuesday, June 7 – just days into the 20th festival.

This week family and friends have paid tribute to Peter, describing him as a man who “believed in Durrington”.

Peter, of Tavy Road, died from an undetected heart disease and leaves behind his wife of 25 years, Tracy, and daughter Laura.

Watch the video to see some highlights of Durrington’s big day and see people pay tribute to Peter.

See this week’s Worthing Herald, on sale from Thursday, June 16, for more tributes to Peter and pictures from the festival.
