VOTE: Flooding fears for Titnore housing plan

NEARLY 150 people packed Durrington Community Centre for the latest meeting on the controversial West Worthing housing development.

Residents spoke of their fears about the proposed 700-house development leading to floods, traffic congestion, and damage to the environment at a meeting held on Friday in New Road, Durrington.

Residents attending the meeting, which was held by Don’t Over Develop Durrington and attended by several councillors and a former mayor, signed a petition and called for a council planning meeting on the development to be moved to a bigger venue to accommodate the numbers expected to turn up.

John Hughes, from Don’t Over Develop Durrington, said: “The strength of feeling on this was there for everyone to see and I hope the councillors who kindly attended will relay that message back to their colleagues at the town hall and beyond.

“We are supposed to live in a democracy and the people of Durrington have made it abundantly clear they do not want this development.

“In those circumstances there is absolutely no way it can be allowed to go ahead.”

A consortium of developers previously had their plans to develop 875 homes on West Durrington rejected by the council in 2010 after strong public objections to the proposals, which included building a road near ancient land in Titnore Lane.

Further to @41 Now I see those stupid idiots councillors on Littlehampton Planning have given consent for a further 600 homes in the Wick area. No regard for the A259 or the A27 or the people currently living there. Still think of all that council tax they can collect and waste. Crazy old world!

@38 Just a quicky Joby, Remember them?...................... Andrew Marr on his show this morning, held up a copy of I think The Sunday Times, of course the headline was all about 911 but there was a smaller article also on the front page, saying something about the Conservative housing policy had been written by a director of Wimpeys!. Whatever, but I think it is hightime that all political parties got real and realised that you cannot build your way out of a recession without losing supporters, especially here in the SE. It is becoming obvious that the SE cannot support much more large scale housing development. People have moved here because of the Downland, the seaside, for many reasons, but overall they like what they see. THEN a developer goes and spoils what they liked about the place HENCE the NIMBYand that NIMBY has a VOTE!

@Scritti Have you complained to Johnston Press directly again? Unfortunately the web editors of this site who moderate the comments have no control over the advertising. I would suggest contacting the advertising department at the newspaper via the contact us link at the bottom of the page.

Off of Topic Im afraid but i have something to say : Dear Johnson press, You continue to run subscription scam ads on your websites despite replying to the email I sent your headoffice in July and confirming you were removing them and taking a look at those you supply advert space to on your sites. You are currently running one which advises on a miracle wrinkle removal technique, the link takes you to the following page : Www.british24worldnews.comhealth-tipsskin This gives you further links to "trial" the product, but British24newsworld is the linking co to these scams, look at the name of thier site for gods sake, it couldnt be more like news24 could it (a common way to get trust, by naming your site almost like a reputable one)??? Given that a large majority of your readers in Worthing are OAPs who have little grasp of how dangerous the web is, and can easily be fooled by stuff like this, do you now not think you should do something about who you sell ad space to? Do what you please with this post. I have again emaileld and copied in Your competitors across the nation in the hope that any bashing they give you in the media will prompt you to act and remove these malicious scammers ads from your sites.

@ 36 ..frankly.. Nobody can doubt the validity of the points you make or indeed the "jobs" requirement raised by 'sparkplugs72' @37. My take on this controversial national policy is slightly different because all major political parties appear to be in agreement on the need to build more houses. In contrast, all over Britain ordinary people are saying "enough is enough" What bothers me in particular about all these building projects is the loss of important agricultural land. As an island race, we appear to be importing ever more foodstuff that should be grown locally. That misguided dependence on food imports presents a threat to our national security and well being in times of crisis. Question; what do the politicians know on this building policy that we don't ? I think it's time someone made the case FOR huge housebuilding projects. After all, without affordable homes for our following generations, Britain will decline rapidly into social chaos.

With regard to Posting 36 Frankly - you have valid points and also what no one has thought of who will be creating the extra jobs in Worhing to support this development? Worthing is becoming very quickly a dormitory town.

@35 Strange posting of yours Joby, not up to your usual standard? Points re this development are. 1 this is prime agricultural land. 2 situated where it is twixt the A27 and the A259 it will impact heavily on both roads, and they struggle now.3 beneath areas of this site are known aquafiers to lay huge areas of concrete within and above these will impact on the ground water and drainage.4 viewed from Highdown Hill greenfields or rooftops?. I know which I would preferr,5 jobs and services, this area struggles to cope now 6 the consortium by agreement would set aside land for a school, but WSCC has no money to build or run that school 7 the present wildlife in the area will be decimated 8 this area provides a strategic gap between the recently built on area, and the National Park. I could go on, but sufficient to say enough is enough for this area.

I suspect this debate has more angles than a bankers conscience ! Those of us that were born in the 40 and 50s have seen many communities in varying locations around Britain decline to the point of near extinction over the last 40 years. What saved many but not all ? Rejuvination. I suspect this proposed building project is just a component part of that essential rejuvination policy. Why not ask your Councillors ?

There will be extra cars on the road - another 700 + can the infrastructure in Worthing cope with this extra traffic?

The proposed development at West Durrington - what about the extra strain on the dentists and drs and resources - I bet no one has thought of that.

No one has thought of the extra strain on the local medical services with these 750 homes.
