West Durrington 700-house proposal approved by council

COUNCILLORS were forced to make a quick exit out the back door last night (Thursday, October 20) after plans for 700 new houses in Durrington were approved.

Fierce tempers were raised at the Worthing Council planning committee meeting held in Worthing Town Hall, which saw council members pass the Durrington Consortium project with four votes to two.

Voting for the application were councillors Bryan Turner, Clive Roberts, Nicky Waight and Carol Molineaux, while Trevor England and Hazel Thorpe voted against the proposal.

The shock decision saw one resident storm out of the room, shouting: “You don’t represent us! You represent the developers, you should be ashamed of yourselves!”

The project, planned for the land north of Fulbeck Avenue in West Durrington, will see 700 new homes being built, with potential plans for an extra 300 homes in the future.

The new development will also feature a new community centre, a multi-use games area, and nature conservation areas. Land and financial provision has also been made by the developers for a new school and medical centre.

Bryan Turner said: “I rejected the developer’s previous application because I was concerned about the environmental impact. But they have amended their plans and they seem far more suitable.”

Read the full report of the meeting in next week’s Worthing Herald (Thursday, October 27).

@ 36 ...A fair point. The Lib-Dems have clearly had a policy change and are no longer in favour of this development but Councillior Hopper (Lib_Dem) is in favour of the Core Strategy ! Make whatever you can of that as it's mind boggling to me. What is clear is that they are now trying to shift the blame for this as they have not declared where they're going to build these much needed houses or, are they going to go against central government policy and just say "No" to any further development ? Cllr Rice has explained the background to their Focus publication but that only has a dig at the Conservatives for nothing more than a residents quote. My question to Worthing Liberal-Democrats is simple, since you voted against Conservatives on this extremely important issue, just publish your alternative house building policy for Worthing ? Do you have an alternative house building policy or is this just another load of muck stirring and opposition just for oppositions sake ?

@34&@35 I have til no resisted the temptation to comment since @1 However. Whilst I welcome the Lib Dems voting agaist the West Durrington Development. I must admit to being a little confused about it all? As I understood it. At one time, the Lib Dems were broadly in favour of the Development Brief for this area. I can only assume they have changed their minds. Much the same can be said over the wet stuff development! Frankly must go and lie down????????????

@ 33 ..That's fair enough except I have leaned to value this quote over many years since I first heard it; "Never believe anything in politics until it has been officially denied." Otto Von Bismark.

@32 I think you should address your question to Paul Yallop - we have issued our categorical denial.

@ 31 ....Fair enough. Therefore I take it you're saying it's Conservative policy to build on our open and recreational spaces ? If not, why was a residents suggestion to build on open and recreational space published in your Focus ?

@29 & @30 - Sorry but you are missing the point - it is not the Lib Dems who are taking the resident's suggestion seriously but the Tories in the "Your chance to be the Chanellor" consultation this year. Otherwise why even mention it? I can categorically assure the Lib Dems have absolutley no plans whatsoever to build on Worthing's green spaces and parks. In fact we are seeking to re-open the East Worthing landfill site by creating new woodland there.

jobys a bit slow again now we know why the liberals voted against the durrington development they don't need it if theyr going to build all these houses on open spaces now all they have to do is tell all of us that they would cancel this development if we vote for them sorry joby theyre smarter than you think chuck

@ 28 .... Thank you for that reply Cllr Rice. It's pleasing to know that a 'residents suggestion' has been taken seriously by the Liberal-Democrats with it's reappearance in the Liberal-Democrat Focus a year after original publication. Therefore we can all safely assume it is Liberal-Democrat policy to build on these open and recreational public spaces ? A simple yes or no will do to my simple question. I will Bookmark this page for future reference should anyone else ask questions on development.

I would refer you to Worthing Borough Council's "Your chance to be the Chancellor" leaflet - issued I take it with the Tory Leader's approval. The parks question is there as a residents' suggestion from last year under "sell off some of our parks and open spaces for other use, such as housing". Residents are asked whether they would be happy for the council to investigate this. Even BBC South Today picked this up at the time.

@ 26 ....You'll not get an answer ratbag as no plans exist to build on Pond Lane recreation ground and anywhere in Northbrook as far as I know.. What was published in their Focus leaflets was pure rubbish designed to cause trouble and nothing more. Why do they do such things ? Nobody I know has the faintest idea so I suggest interested individuals ask Cllrs Donnin and Jones. Posting 23 provides most of the facts.

Well ratbag, since two different results were announced at the meeting, and conveniently who voted how was not recorded in the minutes, then I'd say that is a voting irregularity....The council apparently claim that there was no requirement to do so unless requested, and the public were told of this - however no such announcement was made! Compare that with the meeting in March 2010 when each voting councillor was asked by name how and why they were voting in the manner that they did!
