A COMMUNITY group which helps disadvantaged children is celebrating after it received nearly £25,000 in grants.

West Durrington Phoenix Group, which meets at the Northbrook Project, has been awarded the grants from different organisations.

The charity Sported gave the community group £2,000 to pay for the cost of Brighton and Hove Albion coaches hosting weekly football training sessions for children between the ages of 10 and 16.

The Big Lottery Fund awarded £10,000 to the 12 to 16-year-old group, which was set up in September, with the money going towards the cost of their equipment.

A further £11,000, which will be used over the next three years, came from BBC Children in Need.

That money will go towards courses, MC and DJ classes and the cost of the building being decorated, inside and out, by the Skeleton Crew, which also decorated the P.L.A.Y. building in Stoke Abbott Road.

Laura Scott, volunteer secretary of the group, said: “We’re so pleased that people are recognising the work we do and want to support the children of West Durrington.

“It makes a huge difference because when we started the 12-16 group we had no money to set it up and with this funding we will be able to set up a really good group and will be able to send the children on really good trips.”

The money was awarded to the group in December and January.
