THOUSANDS of residents across Eastbourne were hit by power cuts at the weekend and cinema-goers were sent home on Friday night (November 20).
Around 3,600 households and businesses in Langney, Sovereign Harbour and surrounding areas were affected by the power cut on Friday, which left some residents with no electricity for up to three hours.
Mum-of-two Rosalind Rhodes, of Eshton Road, sai
d, "The power cut happened when I was at home watching Children in Need and it lasted a few hours.
"The kids were scared and we had to dig out the candles."
The Gazette understands customers at Cineworld at the Crumbles Retail Park were sent home after being plunged into darkness on Friday night. The cinema-goers queued to be reimbursed for their film tickets and popcorn.
A second power cut affected around 4,400 customers on Sunday evening (November 22). Some residents were without electricity for just half an hour but others were in darkness for around three hours.
And a third power cut occurred yesterday morning (November 24) in the Willingdon area and lasted for around eight hours.
Joan Morton, of Downs Road in Willingdon, said, "I was awake at 3am and there was no power and it still wasn't on by 10am.
"Once it gets past four hours you lose all the food in your freezer."
This spate of power cuts in the Eastbourne area has not been caused by the adverse weather and EDF Energy says the three incidents are unrelated.
A spokesperson from the energy company said, "At about 8.30pm on Friday, about 3,600 customers in the Sovereign Harbour and Seaside areas of Eastbourne experienced an interruption to their power supplies because of a fault on an underground electricity cable.
"EDF Energy Networks engineers restored supplies to the vast majority of customers at 9.02pm with all supplies were restored by 11.24pm.
"In an unrelated incident affecting a different group of customers, at 5.31pm Sunday (November 22) approximately 4,400 customers in the Langney area of Eastbourne also experienced an interruption. Supplies were restored to the first customers at 6.06pm, to the majority of customers by 7.40pm, with the final customers having power again at 8.37pm.
"At 2.30am on November 24, six customers in the Downs Road area of Willingdon experienced an interruption to their power supplies because of a fault on the local electricity distribution network.
"EDF Energy Networks engineers worked on the problem and supplies were restored at 10.35am.
"We appreciate how difficult it is to lose power, especially at a weekend at this time of year, and would like to apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused by these incidents."
