Around 900 people from churches across the town walked in three processions to converge in South Street Square.

Parishioners from the Broadwater group of churches, which were involved in organising the event, walked from Broadwater Green to join groups walking from Splash Point and Montague Street West.

The groups converged outside the Guildbourne Centre at around 12.30pm.

Worthing mayor Heather Mercer led a procession along Montague Street alongside the Salvation Army band, which attracted onlookers' attention with a sombre, slow drum-beat.

Storm Ministries, a Christian music group, then provided entertainment with new and traditional hymns, accompanied by various dancers.

Anthony Chaplin, secretary of Churches Together For Worthing, a group representing many of the town's churches, hailed the day as a great success.

He said: "It was a happy band of people and an awful lot of people were at services in their own churches. Not all churches in Worthing were able to attend.

"It was a jolly good turnout."
