Organised by Littlehampton Town Council and the Littlehampton Harbour Board, the event on Saturday, June 24, proved to be a great success, despite a grey and cloudy start.

Alan Gammon, the town's mayor, said: "It was a great day for Littlehampton, which provided enjoyment for local families as well as visitors from as far afield as Liverpool. "

Visitors were treated to a number of attractions, including a climbing wall for the adventurous, and Water Walkerz, which gave people the chance to walk on water, for the brave.

Lisa Vincent, who runs the Oyster Pond, where the giant, plastic hamster balls for humans were based for the day, said they were proving very popular.

"There have been queues all day, and everyone is really enjoying giving it a go."

Massive crowds

The Littlehampton Community School Steel Band played three sets throughout the day, pulling massive crowds, and Alice, a Thames barge moored at the river, invited visitors onboard to have a look around.

A charity fair was also held, near Harbour Park, to raise funds for many local causes, including HOMElink, selling flowers grown by its volunteers, and the Littlehampton Carnival.

Hampton the Hedgehog, the carnival's mascot, was dressed as James Bond for the day, and was accompanied by his Bond girls, carnival queen Chloe Wallace, princess Carla Street and last-minute stand in, Charlotte Reader, who took up the sash after princess Ugne Siskaite (crt) was taken ill.

A Big Fish competition, organised by Littlehampton and District Angling Clun, raised £575 for the RNLI, and saw John Shannon win the men's category, with a 8lb 9oz smoothhound, caught on the Spirit of Arun Charter boat.

Beverly Oliver scooped first prize for the women, with a bream weighing in at 2lb 15oz, and a 1lb 10oz dogfish won Sean Wilcock the junior class.

A spokeswoman for the town council said: "We really need to thank the Harbour Board, Penn fishing, Littlehampton and District Angling Club, Littlehampton Carnival, particularly Hampton Bond, The Boathouse Cafe, Arun District Council, Oscar's Fish and Chips, Fred's Fish and Chips, LCS Steel band, Builder Centre, Travis Perkins, Eurotech, East Beach Cafe and the T24 Search & Rescue unit, for all their help."

Other attractions included kayak racing, and crabbing competition, the family section of which was won by Littlehampton's Mayne family, who caught 327 crabs.
