A two-hour set had the members of the Age Concern run centre, in Beach Road, dancing in he aisles, taking up a conga line, and even inciting a seated, high-kicking can-can.

Sue Rixon, who manages the centre, said she and her team were thrilled with the session, which included members of the audience giving the music-making a go themselves, and invited the band back.

The school's band teacher, Lee Nelson, said: "The children enjoyed the reaction that they got and were pleased to be able to do a bit of teaching as well."

Sara Hopkins, community liaison manager at LCS, added: "The energy and enthusiasm of the children was more than matched by the response of the audience. It was lovely to see the different age groups chatting away and playing the instruments together".

She went on the thank Austen Beard, of the Littlehampton
Lions. "Without him and the use of the Lions' van, the band wouldn't be able to get anywhere at all!"

The LCS Steel Band will next play at Mewsbrook Park, on May 5, from 1pm to 3pm.
