Nearly 30 people were fined in a week-long crackdown on people who drop litter and let their dogs foul on pavements.
Hastings Borough Council's new environmental enforcement team served the fixed penalty notices last week.

Councillor Robert Cooke, lead member for environmental health, said: "Last week we struck back against those people who insist on making our
streets untidy and dirty.

"Our teams issued almost 30 Fixed Penalty Notices to litter droppers and irresponsible dog owners. These fines start off at £75, but drop down to £50 if they are paid early.

"Everyone hates seeing our roads and pavements strewn with litter and dog mess and cleaning up costs us £1 million every year.

"The week of enforcement action in the town centre, Old Town and Central St Leonards followed a softer approach where we gave portable ashtrays to smokers, handed out warning leaflets and put up signs around the town warning about the consequences of enviro-crime.

"Time and time again people tell us just how much they hate this kind of anti-social behaviour and we take these complaints very seriously. Our new environmental enforcement teams will be focused very much on stamping out these kinds of problems."
