His DVD constantly ranks in a top 40 workout list, but it took being made redundant and thousands of pounds of credit card debt for him to achieve his dream of becoming a successful Tai Chi instructor.

Stephen Luff, 48, from Durrington, is now bringing calm, relaxation and exercise to scores of people across the Worthing district.

Improving the brain

He teaches standing and seated Tai Chi to people with special needs and dementia, people who have acquired brain injury, people who are in care homes and active over 50s.

Stephen was born in Zimbabwe in the 1960s and then moved to South Africa, where he learned Tai Chi, as well as Judo, Karate, Kung Fu and boxing.

He said: "It got to the point in South Africa where crime was so bad you could barely step outside, everyone knew someone who had been killed.

"I was so worried, I was driving behind my wife while she cycled to work just to check she was okay."

Simple Tai Chi

In 1999, Stephen, his wife and two children decided to move to Durrington and he got a job as a computer programmer in Horsham – but four years ago he was made redundant.

"For the last four years I've been supporting myself with credit cards.

"It turned out being made redundant was my real opportunity, though," said Stephen.

He spent time trying to make money as a life coach and personal trainer, but then his Tai Chi instructing began to take off.

Stephen said: "I began to realise that people I was teaching Tai Chi to couldn't pick up the routines that easily, so I started to develop my own version of some of the routines so it was more manageable.

"My lessons are easy to learn but still deliver the full relaxing experience of advanced Tai Chi."

Amazon top 40

Stephen's beginner Tai Chi proved so popular with people across Worthing, he decided to make a DVD of his lessons.

It took nearly two years, and countless attempts to film, edit and produce the DVD entirely himself. Now, Stephen's DVD, Beginner Tai Chi, which was filmed in Worthing and Steyning, is sold on internet site Amazon and some Worthing shops, and is earning him enough money to support his family.

The DVD has stayed in Amazon's top 40 exercise list since it was released.

Stephen added: "I want people to know that even when it seems you are at the very bottom, there are always opportunities, and it is about grabbing hold of them and trying your very best.

"I feel relieved, I've got a lot of debt to pay back, but now I do have an income so I'm optimistic."
