THERE was smoke without fire at Worthing Hospital when firefighters staged a mock patient evacuation.
Hospital staff posed as patients in a second-floor ward filled with artificial smoke as a team of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus made a dramatic rescue.

Click on the green play button to see video filmed inside and outside the hospital during the exercise on Monday, September 8.

The evening exercise involved retained – part-time – firefighters from Worthing, Lancing, East Preston and Shoreham and five fire engines, an aerial ladder platform and various other support vehicles.

Kevin Hoy, risk and patient safety manager at Worthing Hospital, said the exercise was the first of its kind for more than 12 years and was a valuable way of seeing how staff reacted to a more realistic fire situation.
