WEST Sussex County Council cabinet member Lt Col Tex Pemberton will stand down later this month after more than seven years looking after roads and transport issues.
Lt Col Pemberton will spend his last full year as a county councillor on the back benches, and not seek re-election at the next county elections in May, 2009.

He was elected to the county council for the Fernhurst division in 1997, not long after leaving the Army active list.

He believes he is standing down at a time when "significant progress" has been made on badly-needed improvements to the A27 at Chichester, Arundel and between Worthing and Lancing.

As cabinet member for highways and transport, he has had many meetings with Ministers of State to keep these much-needed improvements on the agenda.

"The A27 and the safety schemes we have proposed for the A24 are firmly on the national radar," he said.
