ADUR'S schools have opened for the first day of term, for the first time as primary schools since the 1970s.
Last year, West Sussex County Council decided to shake-up the first and middle school system in Adur by changing the age of transfer to senior school to 11 from 12.

So rather than going to first school from the age of four to eight and then transferring to a middle school from eight to 12, the new system means pupils will attend a primary from four to 11.

This shake-up has seen some schools close and merge with neighbouring schools, be given new names, logos and being rebuilt or extended.

New classrooms and facilities have been created at Boundstone Community College and at King's Manor Community College to cater for the increased number of pupils the new year seven groups will create.

  • Freshbrook First School is closing and has been merged with Thornberry Middle School in Freshbrook Road, Lancing, to become Seaside Primary School.

  • Templars First and White Styles Middle which are both in White Styles Road, Sompting, have merged to become Sompting Village Primary.

  • Willows First and Oakfield Middle in Irene Avenue, Lancing, have merged to become The Globe Primary School.

  • North Lancing First and Middle School is now known as North Lancing Primary School.

  • Peter Griffiths, county council education and schools cabinet member, said: "This is a major boost for schools in the Adur district which will offer many benefits for generations to come.

"This really is an exciting time for education in the community as we also work towards the creation of two brand-new academies at Boundstone and King's Manor."
