WORRIED council workers thought they had stumbled across a murder scene on Monday morning when they were called to clean up a large amount of blood in an East Sussex town centre.
Lewes District Council staff called in police after finding what they thought was a large amount of blood across the pavement in Newhaven at 6.15am.

But relieved police traced the red mess back to a halloween novelty.

The Candy Blood bags contain a strawberry flavoured drink in hospital-style blood bags for sale in the town's Woolworth's for £1.

PC Matt Holt said: 'It is a sick toy and not the nicest of things to be on sale.

'We will be liaising with Woolworths management and other shop keepers about the items.

'It did cause a number of issues for us.'

A spokesman for Woolworths said: 'Candy Blood is a strawberry flavoured confectionery product which forms part of our Halloween range.

'We have not heard from the police or of any incident involving the product.

'The product is clearly labelled as confectionery and designed to be consumed at Halloween parties.'
