BBC Young Musician of the Year winner wows Brighton
IT was a case of the old and the new as the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra continued their winter season with an interesting mix at the Dome on Sunday (January 31).
With several familiar faces returning to the orchestra after missing a few concerts before Christmas - notably leader John Bradbury and principal oboe Alun Darbyshire - the new was provided by 13-year-old trombone sensation Peter Moore.
Winner of the prestigious BBC Young Musician of the Year award in 2008, the soloist looked every inch an embarrassed teenager but certainly there was nothing embarrassing about his mastery of the intrument.
The trombone has a rich and noble sound that the youngster brought out to the full in an excellent performance of Gordon Jacob's concerto for that instrument and there was even a solo encore.
The only pity was neither soloist or guest conductor Stephen Bell, who had at that point left the stage to the youngster, could offer a few words of explanation.
Nonetheless, Master Moore's command of his chosen instrument assures him of a bright future and let us hope he can find sufficient material to showcase his talent.
The concert opened with Walton's highly evocative Henry V Suite for the famous 1944 Shakespeare film featuring Laurence Olivier as the eponymous hero.
The stirring score earned the composer an Oscar nomination and no doubt played a major part in the film's success.
The second half was devoted to Dvorak's Symphony No 8, not, I have to confess, one of my favourites from the master tunesmith but splendidly performed by the BPO, who clearly have a rapport with Stephen Bell, making a swift return after his usual appearance at the New Year's Eve Viennese concert.
January is traditionally a quiet month but it was still surprising how many empty seats there were at the Dome. Perhaps the next offering of unashamedly romantic music on Valentine's Day (February 14) will appeal to a wider audience.
Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Khachaturian and Bernstein's West Side Story all feature.
