COMEDY THEATRE: Ha Ha Hamlet at Worthing's Pavilion Theatre
As Ben Langley says, it all taps into that great debate about making Shakespeare accessible for our times, about reinventing the Bard for different eras.
Having said that, he freely admits his is a fairly radical reworking. No more the tragedy, Hamlet has become a comedy.
Written by Ben, Ha Ha Hamlet! – co-starring Ben plus Mike Raffone and Andrew Fettes – plays Worthing's Pavilion Theatre on Saturday, June 27 (tickets on 01903 206206).
All three are established Covent Garden street performers, and the show comes straight out of that street theatre tradition, offering Hamlet as it might have been if Shakespeare had written it as a comedy.
In other words, a cross between Mr Bean and James Bond, as Ben explains.
The backdrop of the story is Elsinore castle, but made entirely from suitcases
"It's great fun," Ben says. "It's a bit of a joy to do. Shakespeare would love it after he had got over the initial shock of his plays still being done.
"Personally, I think he would congratulate us on reinventing a different style."
Tickets on 01903 206206.
