PROFILE: Robin Cousins – Holiday on Ice Mystery choreographer and co-director
ROBIN Cousins has starred in, directed and choreographed shows in a longstanding involvement with Holiday on Ice.
This year the Olympic gold medallist is co-director and choreographer of Mystery, coming to the Brighton Centre from January 9 to February 1.
Robin said Mystery has been by far the most challenging show he has ever choreographed.
"The skaters are really put through their paces from the word go," he said. "They must convey a multitude of emotions in a packed two hours, besides delivering the technical prowess associated with my shows.
"I love that they make it happen every day and manage it with great humour, too."
Most recently, Robin, who lives in Brighton, has directed Spirit, a new Holiday on Ice spectacular due to reach Brighton in January, 2010.
He is also head judge on ITV's award-winning Dancing on Ice and the fourth series is back in spring 2009.
This year, for his services to sport and skating, Robin was awarded the MBE by the Queen at Buckingham Palace.
After winning Olympic gold at Lake Placid in 1980, Robin won the World Free Skating Championship gold medal three times, along with World Championship silver and European Championship gold.
A highly successful career as a professional skater followed, appearing as special guest star with Holiday on Ice, with whom he set new, and currently unbroken, box office records for attendance levels over a six-week season at Wembley Arena. He also made many special guest appearances with Ice Capades in the USA.
In 1983, Robin set up his own ice company, choreographing hugely successful shows such as Electric Ice, which not only toured worldwide but enjoyed a 14-week run at Victoria Palace Theatre.
Robin's list of extensive choreographic achievements include ice interpretations of The Wizard of Oz, Starlight Express and Disney's Toy Story on Ice.
In 2000, Robin formed his own company, Cousins Entertainment Ltd, a full entertainment and event production company, which also supplies and manages real and synthetic ice rinks.
Mystery is at the Brighton Centre from January 9 to February 1, 2009. For more information and tickets, go to www.brightoncentre.co.uk
