REVIEW: Annie, Pavilion Theatre, Worthing
IT could be regarded as a brave move for an amateur company to take on Annie, a much-loved musical which relies heavily on young children for its success.
But Sussex Musical Productions was lucky enough to find a wealth of talent locally, so much so that they were able to recruit 38 orphans and two Annies for their five-day run that ends on Saturday (May 16).
On Wednesday (May 13), I saw the red team, led by 11-year-old Kayla Sayers.
No stranger to the big stage, the Glendale Theatre Arts School student has recently spent 18 months performing in Billy Elliot in the West End.
And what a little powerhouse she was, belting out the well-known numbers like Maybe, Tomorrow and Hard Knock Life.
Her experience showed, enabling her to be completely at ease with both adults and the other very talented children on stage – as well as Megan the dog!
She had the support of a fellow artiste from the West End – Caroline Lowe, who appeared as Tessie in the original Annie at the Victoria Palace, London.
Having worked professionally on both stage and television, it was no surprise to see Caroline shine in the role of Grace.
But there was plenty of other talent out there, too, with SMP chairman Tracey Shaughnessy a particular delight as the tyrannical, hard-drinking Miss Hannigan.
Once again, SMP has produced an absolute delight of a show and we can now look forward to their next production, Scrooge the Musical, which runs from November 10 to 14 at the Pavilion.
Performances of Annie are daily at 7.30pm until Saturday, with a Saturday matine at 2.30pm.
