REVIEW: Joseph at Worthing

PLUCK some young men with fine singing voices out of obscurity and into the touring version of a top West End musical.

It might sound risky but I can only call the production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Worthing's Pavilion Theatre a resounding success.

Who needs the winner of the Any Dream Will Do reality TV show when you can have four of the other contestants – and one from Grease is the Word thrown in for good measure.

And who needs to go to London when you have a show of that quality on your very doorstep?

Granted, it's all about the singing, music, colour and costumes rather than acting but that is the essence of Joseph anyway.

Craig Chalmers and former Tesco employee Keith Jack could match any professional in the leading roles of Joseph and the narrator.

What was lacking in acting skills was made up with fine renditions of such classic tracks as Close Ev'ry Door to Me and Any Dream Will do, along with new song, King of My Heart, launched on Monday.

Among the talented brothers were fellow contestants Chris Barton, with a key role as Benjamin, and Antony Hansen as Napthali.

The "King" of Egypt was equally well played by Wayne Smith (Grease is the Word), with a convincing Elvis impression.

The rest of the lively and enthusiastic cast, including the engaging choir from Worthing's Nicola Miles Theatre Studios, took us from Canaan to Egypt and back, via Paris, the Wild West and the Caribbean, on a whirlwind of party atmosphere that had the audience on Tuesday night captivated.

By the end of the show there were members of the audience up and dancing with the brothers and a standing ovation as the curtains closed.

I'm sure everyone went home with a smile on their face, a glow in their heart and a song in their head, like me."Go, go, go Joseph..."

The show finishes its run on Saturday. Box office: 01903 206206.
