Sadness after death of Sussex radio legend Chris Copsey
TRIBUTES have been paid to a “broadcasting legend” who died suddenly just hours after presenting his Sussex-wide breakfast show.
Chris Copsey, known as Coppo, worked over the past 18 months for Media Sound Holdings, which owns Worthing-based Splash FM, plus Arrow, Bright and Sovereign radio stations.
Married father-of-two Chris, who was in his early 50s, lived in Scaynes Hill, near Haywards Heath.
It is believed he collapsed yesterday (Tuesday, January 11) while shopping in Sainsbury’s, Haywards Heath.
Allan Moulds, managing director of MSH, said: “Coppo had been a constant voice on the Sussex airwaves since 1983.

“He was a Sussex broadcasting legend, a consummate professional, but, more importantly than that, he was a great friend, and so much fun to be around and have as a colleague.
“He had mentioned to one member of staff that he wasn’t feeling great, but apart from that, no one was aware of any issues.
“The team is devastated at his loss.
“We have been absolutely overwhelmed by the response. He will be sorely missed.”
Chris took over as breakfast show presenter, networked across the four stations, in early December, having previously worked on the morning show and before that at Southern FM, now Heart.

Friday, January 14, 2011 at 10:53 PMRemember meeting Chris many moons ago at Crawley Hospital Radio just before Southern Sound started up. A really nice lad, and even to the untrained eye you could see that this guy was destined for greater things. An unassuming chap, and one that will sadly be missed by many many people in the area. Yes, he certainly was a legend.

Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at 08:47 PMRIP Coppo - I've followed you for the last 20+ years or so since I was a teenager, through Southern FM and latterly Splash - you brought a smile to everyone who worked with you and listened to you and you and will be missed terribly! My heart, thoughts and love go out to your family, friends and work colleagues who I know will be totally devastated at your loss - you were the hub of radio in Sussex. Rest in peace x
