TRIBUTE: Jive Talkin'
JIVE Talkin' offers an inspiring evening of everything Bee Gees at Worthing's Pavilion Theatre tomorrow (Friday, June 26).
The show brings together Bristol brothers Darren and Gary Simmons as Barry and Robin Gibb, plus Jarrod Loughlin as Maurice Gibb – all under the watchful eye of cousin Mark Simmons.
Mark has recently taken over publicity and promotional duties, a move which keeps it in the family.
"It's not my main job, but it makes sense", says Mark who laments the fact that the recession is starting to hit audiences. It's increasingly tough to get people out.
But once they take the plunge, they will get a great show with Jive Talkin', Mark says: "I grew up with Darren and Gary so I am biased, but they just seem to be able to sing together so effortlessly, whether it was at Christmas parties or whatever.
"They are very close as brothers. They were close when they were growing up together and they have always been on the same lines. They always agree with each other about the show."
To many, The Bee Gees are the ultimate love-them-or-loathe-them band, and Mark admits that he wasn't a particular fan at first.
But he was easily converted, as indeed are many people who come along with slight misgivings.
As he says, so many people don't realise that such-and-such a song was by them – and are quickly won over.
"They have got such a huge back catalogue".
Accompanied by a live string section to complement both the heavily-orchestrated 60s hits (such as Massachusetts and Words) and the many string-heavy disco classics (such as Stayin' Alive and Night Fever), Jive Talkin' set out to bring the full range of their work to the stage.
"The show also features a stunning acoustic medley of some of the Bee Gees' earlier hits," Mark promises.
"As the two-hour show comes to a close, audiences will feel that they have witnessed a truly-entertaining, well-produced show that had them both reaching for their handkerchiefs and dancing in the aisles!"
