RARE PERFORMANCE: Angmering Chorale joins orchestra for Mahler treat

TWO Sussex choirs make their premiere debut with the Sussex Symphony for a rare performance of Mahler Symphony No 2 in Brighton.

Angmering Chorale and Billingshurst Choral Society are linking with the Sussex Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, November 8, to offer a rare performance of Gustav Mahler's 2nd Symphony, the Resurrection.

This is the second concert in the orchestra's new season, performed at St Bartholomew's Church, Ann Street, Brighton, under the baton of conductor, Mark Andrew James.

Mark Andrew James says: "This is another rare opportunity to see and hear one of the most powerful works written by Gustav Mahler. This work is so huge and complex that it is seldom heard outside accepted 'major centres'.

"The Sussex Symphony Orchestra, believes in offering our loyal audiences an excellent selection of music and truly believe that we will again have a packed house for this concert."

"The Resurrection Symphony employs enormous forces, an orchestra of over 130 players, including two off stage ensembles, a choir as large as you can fit on the stage - in our case 160 - together with soprano and mezzo soprano soloists to complete the line up.

"The soloists and choir do not enter the work in performance until the final section, as, until then, the orchestra has painted in music vivid canvasses triggering every sense and feeling. When the singing does begin, it is one of the most magical moments in all classical music and in the extraordinary acoustics and setting of St Bartholomew's, it will be a moment that lives on in memory for a very long time."

Tickets (all unreserved) are 15, concessions and students 10, children under 12 6 from the Dome box office on 01273 709709 or www.brightondome.org
