What was going on in Steyning?

THIS is one of two pictures we are featuring this week from Steyning Museum’s Oddments and Oddities exhibition.

Curator Chris Todd is trying to find out information about various items donated to the Church Street museum over the last year.

The picture above shows Steyning railway station in about 1900.

Why are so many people on the “down” platform? They are mostly men, with several carrying Gladstone bags, with a few lads and boys and even fewer women.

“What was the occasion?” Chris asks.
