A surprise visit from Shoreham Lifeboat crew was the highlight of the day for Irene Gillson on her 100th birthday.

Irene, a resident at the Fernbank Care Home, in Gratwick Road, Worthing, celebrated the day last month with friends and residents.

She has supported the lifeboat station all her life, and Donna Harwood, manager of the care home, said she was as pleased with the visit as she was with her card from the Queen.

She said: “She’s received a card from the crew and she’s quite proud of both.

“She’s been showing them both off to the other residents.

“She’s still very active and goes on daily walks, which is quite rare for someone of her age.”

Irene has family all over the country, including four sisters, all of whom are over the age of 91.
