A MAN has died in a flat fire in Worthing.

Emergency services were called to the property in Gratwicke Road at 5.15am this morning (Monday, March 19) to reports of a blaze there.

Police said both that address and houses on either side were temporarily evacuated, and the body of a man was found in the first-floor flat.

It was believed to be that of the occupant who lived alone there, and a statement released by police said preliminary indications were the fire started in that flat.

They added the cause of the fire was currently unexplained, although at this early stage there was no evidence to suggest it was suspicious.

Police will work with fire investigators to examine the circumstances.

There are no reports of any other injuries.
