FIREFIGHTERS are battling a ‘severe’ blaze at a block of flats in Worthing.
The fire took hold at about 5.20pm this evening (Sunday, April 13) at a flat complex in King Edward Avenue.
Four crews from Worthing and Shoreham were called to the inferno, which had affected six properties.
A woman has been taken to hospital. Reports suggest she leapt from the building. However, it is unclear whether she jumped from a burning flat.
Paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance service were called to the scene, as was a crew from the air ambulance.
A spokesman for the fire service said: “There was thick black smoke coming from the building and a severe fire at the rear of the property. A lot of people were outside the flats when we arrived.”
The fire service remain on scene.
An investigation into how the blaze started has now been launched.
Updates to follow.
