It is believed the brick was thrown at the moving train deliberately, and an investigation is now underway.

Southern Rail confirmed there had been an ‘incident’ at Lancing in which an object appeared to have been thrown at the train.

BTP officers were called at 2.14pm.

“Fortunately no injuries were caused during the incident, which involved the 1.37pm Haywards Heath to Littlehampton service,” said at BTP spokesman.

Passenger Sophie Jones, 18, from Grove Road in Broadwater said she was annoyed at having to change trains after the service was terminated at Lancing station.

“The conductor said when we went past Shoreham Bridge someone threw a projectile at the train and it smashed the drivers window,” she said.

“It could have been a lot worse. It was so pointless, silly and dangerous.”

The BTP are appealing for witnesses.

“If you were in the area at the time and saw anyone acting suspiciously, or know anything about the incident, then please get in touch,” a spokesman said.
