RESIDENTS and businesses in Findon are clubbing together to raise money for our injured servicemen.

Led by resident Carol Maidment, a series of summer fund-raising events is being held across the village, in aid of the servicemen’s charity, Help for Heroes.

Carol, of High Street, Findon, is no stranger to fund-raising, having previously raised £15,000 for the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust.

It came after her son, Steven, a neuropathologist who had done research for the charity, died suddenly, aged 35, and she decided to raise the money in his memory.

Carol, 66, said: “I chose Help for Heroes because, having lost a son, even though it was not to war, I felt there was a link. I think our boys get a rough deal, as we often hear about those who have died in war, but not those who have been seriously injured.

“I think the services represent us, and we should support them, whether we agree with war or not.”

Some of the events which have been organised so far:

l May 28 – The Beauty Lounge, in The Parade, High Street, Findon, is offering taster treatments, a raffle, drinks and nibbles from 11am to 3pm

l June 11 – Carol is hosting a swing night and supper at the village hall, from 7-11pm, with Antony Ferraro singing live. Guests should wear 40s or 50s-style outfits. Tickets cost £20 from Carol on 01903 873529.

l June 19 – There is a cream tea taking place at Findon Manor from 3-5pm.

l July 6 – A seven-course taster evening is being held at The Gun Inn, High Street, from 7pm.

l July 17 – John Henry’s bar in Nepcote Lane is organising a quiz night and raffle.

l August 4 – It is a team skittle night at the Black Horse pub, High Street.

l September 7 – Charity golf day at the Village House pub, High Street.

l September 10 – Carol is also organising a cash prize raffle at the annual village sheep fair.

To mark their achievements as they go, the group has made a fund-raising barometer which they will add to every time an event is held.

Carol is also keen for more people in both Findon Village and Valley to organise their own events – whether it be a coffee morning or a bring and buy sale.
