More shop closues in the town
CONCERNS have been expressed about the demise of two retail stores within the town centre.
Dollywood fancy dress store in Chapel Road has just closed its doors and the Officers Club in South Street store is reportedly due to close as the national chain went into administration – with around half of its branches closing around the country.
No-one from either company was available for comment, but a statement on Dollywood’s website thanked its customers stating that after 12 years of trading it had taken the difficult decision to close.
The news comes in the wake of trouble for Beales department store which announced it may be making redundancies across its group this year.
Tina Tilley, of Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce, believed the loss of high-profile retailers was regrettable, but believed the beginning of the year often heralded considerable change within retail.
She said: “January is always a difficult period for retailers. The short-term lets disappear and this changes the appearance of the high street.
“Worthing has not had as difficult a time as other high streets but there is bound to be some closures. Let’s hope the local shoppers continue to support their local stores.”
